One of the first rock n roll bands in Birmingham featuring Billy Wakeman and Brenda Bosworth.
I joined the band in 1956 and were with them until 1960 when I moved to London. There were many changes in the band during the time I was with them noteably Micky Bakewell, Tony Finnister both went on to join The Modenairs. I came back from London to help out making a recording with the Grasshoppers for an album produced by Davis Gouch called Brum Beat.

In the very early 1960s a group appeared at the Say Mama in Sutton Coldfield . They had a singer called Brenda who sounded like brenda lee. I shall always remember her stage performance Please tell me who she was and how her singing career panned out.
Many thanks
Peter Bellis. Now 72
Unfortunately BRENDA passed away 27th October 2015. Funeral was 11/11/15 Remembrance Day a day that we can never forget my special Sister
She was Britains BRENDA Lee
I remember Brenda Bosworth singing with the Grasshoppers in the late tos at say mama & the Swan at Yardley . I was just 17 at the time and had my first crush. After that I saw her in a couple of gigs then lost her Are there any recordings of her ? I would love to hear her again before I go
If you mean Brenda Bosworth, she was later in the band called Traction – there is a page about them on this website – I don’t know what she did after leaving them though – sorry.
You are right Brenda was in the Grasshoppers & later in the Traction.
I’m very proud to say she is my auntie. My Uncle Keith Poulton
Was also in the Traction. She had an amazing voice. I have loved reading
About them in the Birmingham bands book.
My beautiful auntie passed earlier this week ,
She did, I was at the hospital through the night when this amazing woman passed away, and it was so sad to see her go. We are hoping to get a date and time for her funeral shortly and can post the details for people who would like to pay their respects.
Hi … so sorry and shocked to hear about Brenda Bosworth. My dad Johnny Wren used to be on the circuit with her back in the day along with Ray Whitehouse and Ace Kefford (i think Ace was in the same circuit as well, I certainly remember the name as I was growing up). I remember them all meeting at our house and where they used to do impromptu music sessions. My dad was a drummer in the Creators and The Move as well as other bands around that time and I am desperatey trying to find footage or anything that I can find so I can surprise dad for his big birthday in June,
I understand that dad along with one of the bands was on the Front page in The Brum Beat, but cannot find anything. Can anyone help at all??
If anyone has any old photos of dad (Johnny Wren) or Ray Whitehouse could you contact me please? ….
Again, so sorry to hear about Brenda
Hi Sharran, I was the lead guitarist in the Creators. I have photos taken at Dudley Priory and the old Regal Cinema, Handsworth where we use to rehearse on Sunday mornings. Ray Whitehouse was our Manager and a guy called Keith use to be our roadie. I was deeply upset to find out that Brenda had died, I only found out on the Brum Beat website.
Alan…so glad you remember my dad..would love to get you in touch with him again…do you have an email address? X
Hi there Alan just reading this thread as I’ve been sorting out photos got some great professional ones of the creators , you mentioned a guy called Keith being the roadie, he was my father and sadly he died in a road traffic accident in Italy in may 2913 we were all on holiday together at the time ray Whitehoue with us also and sadly he died later that same year himself we say from a broken heart 😞
Hi! I’m sorry I saw you mention ray whitehouse, I’m actually his granddaughter and I’m trying to find out more about his band days as hes sadly passed away before I could even find out about his band. All I know is one songoing that was sung by him because it was played at his funeral.
Hello do you know a drummer called Graham Bull, I know he was in a band called the chequers with Mike Tyler who changed his name to Mike Sheriden.
I was guitarist with the grasshoppers, Brenda was extraordinary, she was dynamic

My dad Johnny Wren was on the curcuit and was good friends with both Brenda and Ray wHitehouse – do you remember him at all?
South African Country singer Jody Wayne sang with the Grasshoppers at the age of 12. Not sure under which name he went then. Apparently it was his first gig. Has anyone have photos or more info on this. It will be highly appreciated . Thanks
