Celebrating Birmingham's Popular Music History
Our aim to build a complete list of gigs at Shenley Green Youth Club. Here’s a start but we need your help!
The Troggs 05/03/68
Not sure of date’s, but definitely saw the following there Amen Corner, Moody Blues, Easybeats, Pyramids, The Heard, Jimmy Cliff, Ambrose Slade, but i must say the most popular act who performed there was the little heard of since was Delroys Good Good band, fond memories ?
OMG, Delroys Good Good Band, what a night that was every time they were playing (usually Fridays). I thought I was the only person that remembered them.
Turned me on to soul music 50 years ago and still listening now.
IN The Late 60s I Saw A Band Call The Listen AT Shenley Youth Club
The Lead Singer Was Robert Plant Who Went On To Become Lead Singer
With Led Zeppelin.
I was the youth leader in charge of Shenley Green Youth Centre from 1965 to 1971.
From the opening night in 1966, when I booked Nero and The Gladiators, I booked all the bands for the next 5 years.
As one of your contributors has noted, Robert Plant was featured regularly with his band, The Listen.
Souvenir tickets were handed out to every club member when they attended a live music night.
When the era of featured DJs arrived, Barmy Barry was our 1st resident DJ.
During the 5 years, many, many top 20 groups appeared at the club, a lot of whom became household names.
I remember you well. i was at St. Davids youth club before the youth centre opened and was one of the founder members. They were good days, hard to imagine they were more than fifty years ago.
It’s Steve Hancox here. Long time no see? Fond memories at Shenley with you and Lawrence Garner.(Hope you are still in touch with him). You were instamentlal in my journey into YOUTH WORK.I am PROUD to say without you and Frank Knighton.I could NOT have had BETTER role models.GREAT NIGHTS, GREAT MUSIC never to be forgotten.
Does anyone have a photo of Shenley youth club from the 1970s?

Who said they were number one in joining.
There wasn’t a number 1.. joining started from number 2 that belonged to Keith Davies. I was number 3.

Jonathan Williams here, Son of Laurie and Margaret …
And in possession of some (soundless) cine film footage some may like to see.
