Celebrating Birmingham's Popular Music History
Short lived venue in Highgate
Only saw one band at the Alhambra Rock Theatre.
The venue was an old cinema usually showing Indian films (Bollywood style) and on Rock nights an enormous canvas sign was draped over the front of the building.
We saw Steppenwolf there, with not many others attending. At one stage a whole row of seats collapsed as we danced about in front of them. It was probably only about 15 seats, but over the years the number has increased in our heads to about 50!!!
If I recall correctly, I took a bus to an unfamiliar part of Brum (not near city center) to see Lou Reed. According to my search, the New York Dolls opened, but I don’t remember seeing them. I may have also seen The Groundhogs at this venue, but since I saw them at Town Hall I might be mixing things up. Rob, I remember that canvas sign so thanks for jogging my memory – but would love to know exactly where the place was.
I saw Lou who was fab. The gig was on the Moseley Road not far out of town but a bit to far to go and get back. I don’t remember there being a bar and the place was bloody cold
